Dark charcoal card in portrait format. At the top left a short blue vertical bar precedes the header THE BOARD QUESTION, with the word BOARD in blue, and the numeral 04 in blue at the far right, above a thin horizontal rule. Beneath it in small spaced gray capitals: ASK THIS ONE AT YOUR NEXT BOARD MEETING. Filling the left two thirds in large bold white type is the question: What share of our business checking accounts have a debit card attached? — with the closing word attached? in blue. Across the right side, in shallow focus, lies a dark navy business debit card showing a silver chip and the word BUSINESS along its lower edge. Below a short blue rule, a small gray label reads THE POINT, followed in white by: Issued, active, and attached are three different numbers. The PDEX Payment Data Exchange logo sits at the bottom left and pdex.com at the bottom right.

Last week's board question asked what share of your issued debit cards are active — and how your processor defines "active."

There's a number that sits one step earlier than that.

Before a card can be active, it has to exist. On the business side that isn't automatic. The operating account gets opened, and whether a debit card went out with it is its own question, with its own answer.

So that's three separate numbers:

How many business checking accounts have a debit card attached.

How many of those cards have never been used.

How many are active now.

This week's board question:

"What share of our business checking accounts have a debit card attached?"

The first number a bank can usually pull from its own core. The other two take someone to go looking for them.

That looking is what PDEX does.
